Praying the Psalms – Psalm 1: Thought Life

The Psalms is a book of prayers. It covers a wide range of human emotions and can be a catalyst for when you don’t know what to say to God! Join me as I pray through the Psalms. I would love for you to add your prayers and prayer requests in the comments, and I will pray for you right here on the blog.

Psalm 1 (Original text, NIV)

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wickedor stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

A prayer inspired by Psalm 1:

Lord, please focus my thoughts. Direct my steps towards the ways that please you. Please provide friendships for me that will bear good fruit and draw me nearer to you. Help me to be open to those friendships. Help me, Lord, to not dwell on negative things. This can be such a struggle, some days!

Write your words on my heart, Lord. Fill my head with your thoughts. Please help the Bible to be meaningful to me; give me understanding and insight.

Help me, Lord, to thrive – could you be my water? Help me to be healthy in every way: mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. Help me to do good work that will be effective in the right ways.

I know that your ways are best. May I not get sidetracked by the things of this world: selfish ambition, wealth – the things that pass away.

Have mercy on me, Lord. I know that your eyes are always on me, and I thank you for that.

Warm wishes,

Hi, I'm Lisa, a born-and-bred-in-Manitoba mom of 2 boys. Having lived in 7 different Manitoba towns or cities, I've managed to stay warm in them all 😜❄. I am trained as a music therapist but currently work as a fulltime stay-at-home-mom by day, and a piano teacher in the evenings. By night, well...I sleep. Usually.

  1. Father, I agree with Lisa’s prayer.

Please grace Lisa with inspiration and revelation by your Holy Spirit as she prays through the Psalms this month. Bless her and give her energy. Thank you for working in and through each of us in your own planned-out way.

And for me, Lord, my heart especially connects with Lisa’s request that you’d help us to live in a healthy way. It’s cliche in January, but I really want to be healthier physically. Help me not to indulge in quite so much chocolate, and give me the motivation and energy to take walks and do stretches. I need to take care of myself, especially as I get older. And you know I suck at routine, so please help me!

    1. Yes, Lord, I pray for Sara and myself to have the self discipline and motivation to follow healthy routines. In this uncertain time of COVID and plans constantly changing, I know that chocolate has often been an all-too easy escape for me. Lord, please improve my mental state and ability to cope, that my physical health would benefit as well. Oh Father, prepare us for what this year will bring. And strengthen me to be NICE TO MY KIDS. Thank you so much for community and for Sara to pray along with. Amen.

  2. Father, thank you for allowing my path to cross with Lisa’s again. Please bless her heart and her words as she prays through the Psalms. Help her and her family to face each day you give them.

I ask you prepare me for my next blood tests next week and for the results. I pray there will be improvement with my kidneys. Amen.
